Established as a county on November 14,1809, Lincoln County was named for Revolutionary War hero General Benjamin Lincoln. Gen. Lincoln was a Mason and member of Boston Lodge, he was selected by General and Brother Washington to accept the surrender of the British at Yorktown,Virginia. The name Fayetteville was chosen in honor of the many settlers who came here from Fayetteville, North Carolina. During the War of 1812, Lincoln County furnished a company in General Andrew Jackson's Army and participated in the Battle of New Orleans. In 1846 Lincoln County also furnished a Company of men for the Mexican War. Known as the Lincoln Guards , the company distinguished itself for gallantry at the battles of Monterey,Vera Cruz, and Cerro Gordo. During the War Between the States, Lincoln County furnished 21 companies of Infantrymen for the Confederate Army. During the later part of the war, Fayetteville was occupied and several churches were vandalized and all the Lodge records of Andrew Jackson Lodge were destroyed by the Union Army. At one time there were 14 Lodges in Lincoln, they all merged with Andrew Jackson over the years. A number of famous Americans and Masons have lived in or visited Lincoln County including, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston,Daniel Boone, and General Andrew Jackson. General Jackson was the first Grand Master to become President of the United States.
