This is a story of Brotherly love during the War between the States when fayetteville was occupied by Union Forces. In 1864 the Union Commander in Fayetteville accused a young boy of being a spy and ordered him to be executed. His brother John Massey was home on leave from the Confederate Army and told the Union Commander that his little brother was not a spy and was not even in the Army, John volunteered to take his brothers place , if the Commander would release his little brother. The evil deed was done, the Yankee Commander had John hung, even though he was innocent. He was hung from a tree that stood where the present Public library now stands. John was buried at the cemetery of the First Presbyterian Church. A bronze marker dedicated to the sad event is on the County Court House grounds in Fayetteville.
